How does old-age retirement work?

Old-age retirement in Brazil is a social security benefit granted by the National Social Security Institute (INSS) to workers who reach a certain minimum age and fulfill a minimum contribution period. 

This benefit provides a monthly income to guarantee the financial security of senior workers. 

The value of the old-age pension is calculated based on the worker's average contribution wages throughout his or her working life.

Requirements to be entitled to retirement due to age

To retire by age, the requirements vary depending on the worker's gender and the length of contribution to the National Social Security Institute (INSS). Next, check out the detailed requirements.

Minimum age

  • Men: must be at least 65 years old;
  • Women: Must be at least 62 years old.

Contribution Time

In addition to the minimum age, it is necessary to fulfill a minimum period of contribution to the INSS:

  • Men: must have contributed for at least 15 years (180 months);
  • Women: like men, women must have contributed for at least 15 years (180 months).

How to apply for retirement due to age?

The process of applying for retirement due to age may seem complicated, but by following a few steps, it is possible to do everything in a smoother and more organized way. 

1. Check your contribution time

Before applying for retirement, it is important to check whether you have met the minimum contribution period. This can be done by accessing the portal “My INSS“;

On the portal, you can consult your contribution statement and check if there is any pending or unaccounted contribution period.

2. Separate the necessary documentation

To apply for old-age retirement, you will need to present some documents. Among the main ones are:

  • Identity document with photo and CPF;
  • Proof of address;
  • Work and social security card (CTPS);
  • Extract from the CNIS (National Register of Social Information);
  • Documents proving contribution time, if there are periods not recorded in the CNIS;

3. Schedule service at INSS

After gathering all the necessary documentation, it is time to schedule the service through “My INSS”. On the portal, choose the option “Schedule your Expertise” and then select “Urban Age Retirement”. 

4. Attend the appointment

On the scheduled day, go to the service location with all documents. It is important to arrive in advance to avoid unforeseen events. 

During the service, an INSS employee will analyze your documentation and clarify any questions you may have.

5. Follow the Process

After the request, you can monitor the progress of your request through the “My INSS” portal. On the website, there is the option “Consult Orders”, where you can check the status of your application.

6. Receiving the Benefit

If all requirements are met and the documentation is correct, the INSS will approve retirement based on age. 

Payment of the benefit will be made monthly, according to the INSS calendar, to the bank account indicated at the time of the request.
