What does night overtime mean?

Night overtime occurs when someone works beyond their normal hours during the night, usually between 10 pm and 5 am, as defined by labor law in Brazil.

These hours have a higher pay value, because in addition to being overtime, which already has an increase, they also receive an additional amount for being worked at night.

Working at night can be more tiring and affect well-being, which is why the pay is higher.

So, working overtime at night means receiving a higher salary for your work, as a way of compensating for the additional effort of being active during a time that would normally be a time for rest.

What is the value of night overtime?

When an employee works beyond his normal working hours, he receives extra payment, known as overtime, which must have an increase of at least 50% over the value of the hour worked during regular working hours.

On the other hand, hours worked at night, between 10 pm and 5 am, have an additional charge of at least 20% over the value of the daytime hour, due to the different conditions of that period.

Therefore, when work is carried out at night and exceeds regular working hours, the employee is entitled to receive these two additional payments: 50% for being overtime and 20% for being at night.

It is worth noting that this accumulation of values makes nighttime overtime even more advantageous for the worker, recognizing both the additional effort of working beyond the hours and the impact of working during a period naturally intended for rest.

How to calculate night overtime?

Although many people think that doing the calculation is a complicated task, the formula for this process can be much simpler than you think.

To calculate night overtime, it is important to consider two factors: the additional amount for being an extra hour and the additional amount for being a night hour.

Step by step to calculate night overtime:

  • Calculate the value of a normal hour: if you receive a monthly salary, divide the value of your salary by the number of hours worked in the month;
  • Calculate the overtime allowance: overtime has an additional charge of at least 50% over the value of the normal hour;
  • Calculate the night shift allowance: night work (between 10pm and 5am) has an additional amount of at least 20% over the value of the daytime hour;
  • Calculate night overtime: for night overtime, you combine the two additional hours: 50% for being overtime and 20% for being night.

Check out the example below!

  • Monthly salary: R$ 2,200.00;
  • Monthly hours worked: 220 hours;
  • Normal hourly rate: R$ 10.00;
  • Additional overtime: 50% (R$ 15.00 per hour);
  • Night shift supplement: 20% (R$ 12.00 per hour);
  • Night overtime value: R$ 18.00.

If you worked 2 hours of overtime at night: 2 hours of overtime at night: 2 × R$ 18.00 = R$ 36.00. Therefore, by working two hours of overtime at night, you would receive R$ 36.00 in addition to your normal salary.

With this formula, you can calculate the amount of your salary and check if everything is correct.
