What is PIS?

PIS, the Social Integration Program, is a benefit created by the government to integrate private sector workers with the development of companies.

In principle, it works as a type of salary bonus, paid annually to workers who meet certain criteria.

The amount can be up to a minimum wage, which makes all the difference to those who receive it. However, not all workers are entitled to this benefit, and Young Apprentices fall into a separate category, with specific rules.

Are Young Apprentices entitled to PIS?

Young Apprentices are not entitled to the PIS salary bonus. This is because this benefit is aimed at workers who receive up to two minimum monthly wages and have been employed for more than five years with a signed employment contract.

As the apprenticeship contract is temporary and with a reduced salary, it does not meet the requirements to be entitled to PIS.

However, although the apprentice is not entitled to the salary bonus, young people who work through the program still contribute to PIS and may benefit from this program in the future, when they meet the necessary rules.

What are the criteria for receiving PIS?

As mentioned, there are some important criteria that workers need to meet. By knowing the rules, you can understand why apprentices cannot receive PIS.

  • Be registered with PIS for at least five years;
  • Having received, on average, up to two minimum monthly wages in the base year considered;
  • Have worked formally for at least 30 days, consecutively or not, in the base year;
  • Have the data correctly reported by the company in the Annual Social Information Report (RAIS).

Attention! As the apprenticeship contract has a maximum duration of two years and the salaries paid to young apprentices are often lower than the minimum wage, this prevents access to the salary bonus.

What prevents a person from receiving PIS?

Workers who have been absent from their professional activities and received sickness or accident benefits for a period of more than one year lose the right to the PIS salary bonus.

This is because, during the period in which they are away and receiving these benefits, they are not contributing to the PIS fund, since the employment relationship is temporarily suspended.

Furthermore, to be entitled to the benefit, it is necessary to meet requirements such as having carried out paid activity for at least 30 days in the base year considered.

Therefore, even if the worker returns to work after being away, a period of inactivity of more than 12 months prevents access to the PIS benefit for that year.

What other benefits are Young Apprentices entitled to?

Although Young Apprentices are not entitled to withdraw PIS, they have access to a series of other important benefits guaranteed by labor legislation.

These benefits help protect young people during their journey into the job market and provide financial security. Below, we list the main rights guaranteed to Young Apprentices:

  • FGTS (Service Time Guarantee Fund);
  • 13th Salary;
  • Paid vacations;
  • Registration in Work Card;
  • Transportation Voucher and Meal Voucher;.
  • Training Course.

All these rights are fundamental for the safety and professional development of the Young Apprentice.

Furthermore, access to training courses qualifies young people and increases their chances of obtaining new job opportunities at the end of the apprenticeship contract.
